President Ilir Meta has not hesitated to sign the dismissal of the Chief of General Staff, Bajram Begaj, thus paving the way for his candidacy to be the new head of state.
Meta signed from Istanbul, where he is on an official visit, the decree on the dismissal of the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Albania, as well as the release from service in the Armed Forces of Major General Bajram Begaj.
Bajram Begaj submitted this morning to the Minister of Defense, the resignation from the post of Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces. The news was announced at the meeting of the SP parliamentary group, by the leader of the group Taulan Balla, who invited the current president not to become an obstacle in this procedure, but to sign his dismissal.
In a reaction from the press office of the Presidency, it was written that President Meta had a telephone conversation with the Minister of Defense, Niko Peleshi, is following the procedure for the election of Mr. Bajram Begaj as the new President of the Republic and will respect any decision of the Assembly expressed by vote.
The next step is now the meeting of the Law Commission, which starts at 16:00 and will review the constitutional legal criteria of the candidate proposed by the Socialists the day before.
Then, at 18:00, the session in the Assembly will start. Today will be the fourth round of the process for the election of the President, but the first where there is a candidate, whose name is deposited in the assembly. In this round, 71 votes, which the majority has, are enough to appoint Ilir Meta’s successor, who will hand over the task on July 24.
