President Ilir Meta in a statement to the media after the meeting with Taulant Balla, said that he received the guarantee that the SP is ready for the local by-elections at any time.
The President clarified that he had not invited any party to consult on the local by-elections, but that the meeting with Mr. Balla took place as he is the representative of the majority in the Assembly, and he had to make sure that the majority did not would boycott the election.
Meta said there are two possibilities when by-elections could be held on February 27th or March 6th.
Meta: There was no official invitation for any party, for consultations. To resolve this issue, you know my official initiatives with the CEC, the government and the assembly, and in all the actions I have taken. There will be an official communication today, if I had an invitation for the parties, there was no invitation for the SP either, that I would have sent it to the chairman, but there was an informal request, for a consultation with the chairman of the majority in the Assembly, Mr. Balla, since we had some dilemmas of interpreting the election date. In my judgment, I believe I should have given an explanation to Balla as the representative of the majority in the assembly for an opinion of the state election commissioner, that every day more for them would be helpful.
I received the guarantee from Balla that they are ready at any time for the elections and they understand this, there was no consultation with the parties, but with the representative of the majority in the assembly so that we would not have controversy with the majority. Now either February 27 or March 6, are like dates, the CEC is important that it deals with this process.
Two days ago, Meta sent an official letter to the Prime Minister, asking for information on the number of municipalities left without a mayor.
This letter comes after the response of the Central Election Commission in Albania.
“Who exactly are those local units in which during this period June 30, 2019-January 2022, according to your information and assessment, the mandate of the Mayors has ended prematurely”, underlines the Presidency.
The CEC, through an official letter, earlier responded to President Meta, regarding the holding of local elections.
Meta had requested information from the CEC regarding vacancies in the positions of mayors.
In response, the CEC writes that the municipalities without a mayor are Vora, Dibra and Shkodra, while underlining that they have no knowledge of Lushnja, Rrogozhina and Durres, as they had to be informed by the Council of Ministers.
The municipalities that have been left without a mayor are those of Shkodra, Vora, Durrës, Rrogozhina, Dibra and Lushnja.
Currently, Vora, Durrës, Rrogozhina and Dibra are run by appointed rather than elected mayors.
While Voltana Ademi in Shkodra continues to hold the mandate beyond the deadlines.
