Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who stepped down in early December, turned down a job offer from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Angela Merkel “called the UN Secretary General last week, thanked him for the offer and said he would not accept it,” her office said in a statement to AFP, confirming the information that appeared in the media.
The statement did not say what kind of commitment the former German chancellor offered to Guterres, but the media previously reported that he was chairing the UN Advisory Committee on Global Public Goods, which is one of his major reform projects.
Merkel, who has long announced her withdrawal after the German parliamentary elections in September 2021, reiterated on several occasions that she does not want to take any new office after her term expires.
Ever since she finally left the political scene on December 8, she has been dedicated to writing political memoirs with her former adviser and close associate Beate Bauman.
Her goal is to explain the key political decisions she has made during her 16 years in power, her adviser said.
