Following his visit to the United States, Prime Minister Edi Rama met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the State Department.
Secretary Blinken welcomed Prime Minister Rama and expressed satisfaction with Albania’s membership in the UN Security Council for the period 2022-2023.
He praised the commitment and contribution of Albania over the years, in numerous United Nations bodies, for the sake of peace and understanding between the countries.
In particular, the US Secretary of State praised the readiness of Prime Minister Rama and the Albanian government to provide shelter and hospitality for Afghan refugees in Albania.
“I have to tell you, Prime Minister, what I have been impressed by and will remain for a long time, the fact that, at the beginning of the summer, after we announced that we would leave Afghanistan and end the war there, you were the first to offer to wait for refugees, Afghan refugees and that is exactly what you did. This is a great honor for you and for the generosity of Albania, that you offered a safe haven to over 2,000 Afghans. I am grateful to you for this, but also for the work you do every day in Europe for security and the strengthening of close ties, especially through NATO and also, as I said, in the Security Council, where we have many challenging issues for which we must work togetheru. ” – said Secretary Blinken.
On his part, Prime Minister Rama thanked US Secretary Blinken and expressed satisfaction with the meeting held at the beginning of the year, which marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Albania and the United States.
“We value this friendship, this relationship as the most precious thing. We are very proud to be by your side and help as much as we can, to return what you have done for us over the years, not only for Albania, but also for Kosovo Albanians and Albanians everywhere. Thus, we are very proud to be your allies and we will do our best to deserve this special friendship. “ – said Prime Minister Rama during the meeting.
Prime Minister Rama and Secretary Blinken praised the excellent relations between the countries concretized in a series of partnership agreements of mutual interest and stressed the joint commitment for their further deepening. Secretary Blinken expressed gratitude for the successful cooperation between the United States and Albania in various fields.
