Irpin Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn has announced that eight civilians were killed in the midst of an evacuation in Irpin, a neighborhood west of Kiev, after intense bombardment on Sunday.
In a statement to the Telegram on Sunday, Markushyn said the Russians opened fire along a bridge as Ukrainian citizens were being evacuated to Irpin.
“A family died, two small children and two adults died before my eyes,” Markushyn said.
As previously reported, the city was hit hard by artillery fire and airstrikes because it stands in the way of Moscow troops towards the Ukrainian capital. Videos from the scene circulated on social media, where civilians were moving at the checkpoint before the explosion, caused by a shell or mortar.
“Irpin is at war, Irpin has not surrendered. “Part of Irpin was indeed captured by the Russian occupiers, but part of Irpin is fighting and will not surrender,” Markushyn added.

Markushyn further added that another evacuation would begin Monday morning.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict has entered its 11th day, and after two meetings for negotiations has not yet reached a peaceful solution.
