Russian President Vladimir Putin began his Victory Day speech by telling Russian fighters in Ukraine that they were “fighting for Russia’s security.”
He said the NATO military alliance, where Ukraine has expressed ambitions to join, is a “visible threat” to Russia.
Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine – as Putin describes its neighbor’s occupation – has been a “necessary action” and “timely,” the Russian leader said.
“In Kiev they said they could provide nuclear weapons and NATO has started exploring the lands near us. This has become a visible threat to our country and our borders. “Everything has shown that there is a need to fight,” Putin said, without providing any evidence of his claims.
He added that Russia “asked Europe to find a fair compromise, but it did not want to listen.”
Putin said the death of every Russian soldier and officer “is painful” and stressed that the Russian state “will do everything possible to take care of their families.”
“You are fighting for your homeland, for its future,” Putin told Russian soldiers fighting in eastern Ukraine.
Russia marks Victory Day today, or what is known as the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945.
Troops, tanks, rockets appeared in Moscow Red Square and other cities of the country.
Under Russian President Vladimir Putin, this day has become a show of strength of the Russian army, as well as an occasion to commemorate the sacrifices of World War II.
There has been speculation that Putin could use today ‘s case to make a big announcement about the invasion. Western officials have said he could declare full-scale war in Ukraine, but the Kremlin has denied this.
