The strategic port of Mairupol has not fallen yet said the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal.
Although the Russians have been directing all their fighting force in the area for six weeks and have called for the city to surrender to save the lives of the soldiers, the prime minister said that the Ukrainian resistance will continue until the end.
As the resistance continues, the Russians are already aiming to completely destroy the city, turning it into a ghost.
President Zelensky has previously said he would suspend all talks with Russia if soldiers in Mariupol were killed, but for Putin those talks had reached the point of death.
Summing up the war, the Ukrainian prime minister said that despite the fact that several cities are under siege, only one of them has fallen into the hands of the Russians, Kherson in the south of the country. 900 other cities had been liberated from the invaders according to him.
But the ongoing battle in Mairupol is important, strategically and symbolically. The fall of this city would provide the Russians with a land route to the annexed Crimean peninsula, while the Ukrainians would lose one of the cities that greatly affects the local economy, as it is home to the largest port in the Azov Sea region. and is the home of a large iron and steel factory. The city is also a major export hub for Ukraine’s steel, coal and corn.
Another tragic event was recorded in the northeast of the country, in the city of Kharkiv where the bombing of Russian forces hit civilian buildings, killing five people and injuring 13 others according to health officials.
