Chechen army special forces were seen today in a Russian video fighting house-to-house in the besieged city of Mariupol where hundreds of women and children remain trapped in shelters or the rubble of the destroyed theater building.
Footage released by pro-Russian Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov showed his fighters firing on a fire coming from a high-rise apartment building.
The propaganda video then showed Chechen soldiers helping residents get out of shelters, one of whom was holding a small child in his arms.
The images came as many people are believed to be stuck in the ruins of the ruined theater of the city, writes the British Daily Mail.
The mayor of Mariupol, Vadym Boichenko, said: “Tanks and machine guns continue the battle, there is no part of the city that has no signs of war.”
Nick Osychenko, head of a television station in Mariupol, said he had left with six family members, aged between 4 and 61.
Ukrainian politician Serhiy Taruta said about 130 people had been rescued from the theater but others were missing. According to him, there is no possibility of help as the rescue services have been destroyed by Russian troops.
“Nothing is understood. “The services that were supposed to provide assistance have been destroyed, the doctors have been killed,” he said, adding that he may have died among the survivors in the rubble.
Dmytro Gurin, a Ukrainian MP from Mariupol, told the network BBC that some people have managed to evacuate but others remain in ruins.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said today that its troops are in the city and will soon be controlled by them.
