A court in Istanbul on April 19 sentenced rapper Murda to more than four years in prison, as the lyrics of his songs “encouraged drug use”, his lawyer told Dpa.
However, the court decision is not final. The 38-year-old rapper, a Dutch citizen, is currently in the Netherlands. He denies the allegations, said his lawyer, Ümit Gürkal Egemen, adding that he would appeal the decision “unfairly”.
Murda, whose real name is Mehmet Önder Doğan, sings mainly in Turkish and is well known in Turkey.
Murda acted “within the norms of freedom of expression,” said lawyer Egemen, adding that the allegations refer to three songs of this singer, one entitled “Eh Baba” which has over 116 million views on YouTube. “I rolled a cigarette [me marihuanë]”stunned me”, it is said in one of the lyrics of his songs.
The singer was detained for a short time last October at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen Airport, because with the lyrics of his songs he “promotes drug use”.
Turkey in recent years has targeted rap singers, who are known for their critical statements about the Government and Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In 2018, the famous Turkish rapper, Ezhel, was arrested because the lyrics of his songs promoted drug use, but then he was acquitted./Rel
