Well-known singer Mariah Carey has recently been sued for copyright infringement on her 1994 Christmas mega-hit, “All I Want for Christmas is You”.
Singer-songwriter Andy Stone says he wrote a song of the same name five years before Carey released her hit, arguing that Carey took advantage of his popularity and style.
Despite having a title, the two songs look different, but Stone claims Carey caused confusion and did not ask permission. Mariah Carey has not yet responded to the allegations. “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey is one of the most popular Christmas hits of all time. Since appearing on the album Merry Christmas in 1994, the song has topped the charts in several countries and by 2017 it is said to have brought Carey more than $ 60 million in revenue.
The song has been streamed 1 billion times on Spotify. Stone, who performs under the name Vince Vance, with the group ‘Vince Vance & The Valiants’, is seeking at least $ 20 million in damages. The complaint alleges that Carey, as well as her co-writer Walter Afanasieff and the record company ‘Sony Music Entertainment’, received undeserved profits from the song, arguing that the defendants knowingly infringed on copyright.
In a recent recollection, Carey admitted that he composed most of the song on a small Casio keyboard. Meanwhile, it is not clear why the accusation was made only now, 28 years after the release of Mariah Carey’s song. We bring to your attention that last year the brother of the famous singer, Morgan sued him because according to him she had portrayed him in “The Meaning of Mariah Carey” as a violent man. But, apparently Mariah did not leave this story with that and recently asked her brother to pay her legal costs after the defamation lawsuit./ Top Albania Radio
