Maria Bamieh, a former prosecutor fired after she whistled for corruption in the EU’s largest foreign mission in Kosovo, EULEX, will be paid more than £400,000 by Great Britain in compensation, The Guardian reports.
Maria Bamieh has claimed for the past eight years that the Foreign Development Office (FCDO), a British government department, failed to provide support to her as she tried to expose possible collusion between EU officials and suspected criminals in Kosovo.
Instead, she said, government officials told her to ignore the obvious evidence of collusion in the EU’s rule of law mission, called EULEX.
Her case was expected to be heard in court in May and June this year, but the parties agreed to a compensation of around 423,000 British pounds shortly before the first hearing.
The FCDO said it continues to strongly deny Bamieh’s claims.
Maria Bamieh had accused the EULEX mission of unfair dismissal after making allegations of corruption against international prosecutors and judges serving in Kosovo.
Bamieh claimed to have been aware of how a EULEX judge had accepted around 300,000 euros in compensation to acquit a former senior official of the Ministry of Health.
After leaving this mission, Bamieh has continued her legal battle against EULEX in Great Britain.
EULEX is the largest mission sent abroad by the European Union.
The purpose of EULEX is to support the relevant rule of law institutions in Kosovo.
Since coming to Kosovo in 2008, this mission has cost the EU hundreds of millions of euros. Radio Free Europe
