One of the most important dates in the history of the Albanian people, without a doubt, is the Covenant of Lezha, also known as the “Albanian League of Lezha”, the Assembly of Lezha, or the League of Albanian Princes.
This connection has to do with the Assembly of Albanian Princes of 1444, who at the initiative of Gjergj Kastriot-Skanderbeg, who a year ago had returned to Kruja in order to unite the forces of the Albanian principalities to oppose the Ottoman Empire. The Covenant of Lezha was convened on March 2, 1444, in the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, in Lezha.
The organizers of the assembly were the leader of the Kastriot Principality Gjergj Kastrioti. The aims of the assembly were to unite as many principalities of the Balkan countries and beyond known as the lands of the Byzantine Empire.
The main members of the covenant are the Arianites, Balshaj, Muzakaj, Spaniards, Zahariaj and Gjurash.
The term “Covenant of Lezha” was forged by later historians. The Assembly of Lezha is valued as the starting point in the creation of the Albanian state.
