Saheed says he has walked for three years from his hometown in South Africa to visit Mecca, and travel setbacks during the virus lockdown did not deter him from reaching his goal.
The believer recently arrived at his destination and showed his happiness to the media.
Saheed, from Cape Town in South Africa, arrived this week in the holy city in Saudi Arabia after a journey he said began in August 2018.
He has traveled on foot or by means of chance through countries such as Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Kenya before reaching Palestine, where he was forced to stop traveling due to the isolation and restrictions of Covid-19.
He tells about his journey: “I had to stop in Palestine for a year and a half, and after the reopening of the border I went to Lebanon, then to Medina and then to Mecca.”
Saheed joined hundreds of other pilgrims traveling to Mecca after the city opened to the flow of visitors.
At the opening of the pilgrimage this year, 1 million people will be allowed to visit Mecca to walk around the holy Kaaba, 850,000 of whom will be foreigners.
The pilgrimages are expected to generate a lot of revenue for Saudi Arabia as white-robed worshipers flock to souvenir shops and restaurants in the city of two million people.
