The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, through a letter addressed the parliament and citizens of North Macedonia for the support of the French proposal for the settlement of the dispute with Bulgaria, which, according to Macron, paves the way for European integration.
“A historic opportunity is opening, the choice is yours”French President Emmanuel Macron told the Macedonian citizens, in the letter published on Thursday by the French embassy in Skopje.
Macron does not claim that the French proposal is perfect, but says that it brings the country into the European Union. According to the French head of state, “the proposal considers the Good Neighbor Agreement as the foundation of European values” therefore he emphasized the need for the revision of the constitution for the integration of new communities in it.
“Your country is already an example of coexistence in Europe”, Macron points out in the letter.
“Now it’s up to you Macedonians to declare yourself. The power to change the course of history is now in your hands. I won’t tell you this deal is perfect, but it will clear your European way. Like any agreement, this one is based on compromises and balance. This agreement does not call into question the official existence of the Macedonian language, which is an integral part of your identity“, wrote Macron.
Referring to the Ohrid and Prespa agreements, with which North Macedonia became a member of NATO, Macron says that “the Macedonian people have earned the respect of all of Europe and the acquired dignity of the Macedonian people will never be questioned.” .
With similar messages, the head of the European Council Charles Michel and the German special envoy for the Balkans, Manuel Sarrazin, stayed in Skopje these days.
The French proposal has been supported by Bulgaria, which also decided to remove the veto for Skopje to start negotiations with the EU, which it had decided in November 2020.
The ruling parties in Skopje support the French proposal, but it is opposed by the Macedonian opposition, which has been organizing protests for five days now, which escalated into violence in the streets of Skopje.
The Macedonian opposition led by VMRO DPMNE considers that the proposal calls into question the existence of the Macedonian language and identity. Radio Free Europe.
