French President Emmanuel Macron will hold a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Friday about the crisis in Ukraine.
“I will have a telephone conversation with President Putin on Friday morning so that we can look at the whole situation together,” Macron said after a meeting today with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin. The Elysee Palace announced on Monday that Macron would propose to Putin “a way to calm the Ukrainian crisis.”
“We are concerned and very careful not to create additional uncertainty and instability,” said the French presidency amid tensions between the West and Russia over Ukraine. Macron said his conversation with Putin on Friday would give the Russian leader the opportunity to give a “clarification” on Moscow’s plans for Ukraine.
Macron accused Russia of acting as an “imbalance force” through its behavior not only in Ukraine but also in Belarus, the Caucasus and Moldova. He said the situation was worrying and called on Europe to stand united and prepare a “common response”. “It also means that we need to have a clarifying dialogue with Russia, because I think this dialogue is necessary to get rid of the ambiguities,” Macron said.
The gathering of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine has raised fears of a conflict, but it remains unclear what the Kremlin’s intentions are. Some analysts predict that Russia is considering some kind of intervention in Ukraine, although Moscow has insisted it is not planning a new attack on its neighbor after the annexation of Crimea in 2014. Senior representatives of Germany, Russia and Ukraine will discuss in Paris on Wednesday over Ukraine together with French officials in the so-called quadrilateral format “Normandy”, France24 reports.
