France must mobilize to prepare for the likely scenario of energy shortages this autumn because Russia is using supply cuts to Europe as a weapon in its war with Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday.
Speaking in a televised interview to mark France’s national day, Macron said part of that mobilization would involve French consumers and businesses reducing their energy use.
The European Union, which before the war in Ukraine got about 40% of its gas from Russia, has made plans to cut imports by two-thirds by the end of the year and completely ban Russian gas by in the year 2027.
The bloc has already decided to block Russian coal starting in August and most Russian oil within six months. The aim is to reduce the amount of 850 million dollars a day Russia receives from oil and gas sales in Europe. Reducing this amount, then, would prevent the financing of its war in Ukraine.
European governments and companies have been buying liquefied natural gas from the United States. This gas, which is distributed by ship, is more expensive, compared to the gas provided from Russia, through pipelines./rel
