The VMRO-DPMNE party on Saturday started collecting signatures for the postponement of the census in Northern Macedonia, scheduled for April.
The Macedonian opposition claims that the ruling parties have rigged the census results in terms of the percentage of Albanians in the country and that with such an action, according to her, there will be no statistical operation, but a political one.
“The census is a statistical operation, and as such should be based on a methodology and process that will show real results, not false ones, based on coalition agreements. “After the massive response of the citizens against the registration, (Prime Minister Zoran) Zaev should immediately withdraw from the idea of registration in April.”, it is said in a communiqué of VMRO, which claims that only on Saturday over 25,000 signatures of citizens were collected.
The leader of this party, Hristijan Mickoski, has accused the government of “overthrowing the state and impoverishing the citizens”.
“Imagine for four years we were immersed in this swamp and political mud. They did not do any project from start to finish. Imagine what this recording made in 20 days would look like, according to a recipe written by Zoran Zaev and SDSM? I tell you, this is a great shame“, Declared Mickoski.
Under current law, the opposition must collect over 30,000 signatures to bring the debate back to the Census Law, but that does not automatically mean postponing the process, as the parliamentary majority can still vote on the same law, which gives it the form of cut the census.
The Social Democratic League of Prime Minister Zoran Zaev has said that no opposition initiative will be able to postpone the registration, while according to her, “VMRO with this step aims to hide dissatisfaction within it.”
“VMRO-DPMNE and Hristijan Mickoski are anti-human parties, working against the citizens and against the state. Therefore, it is clear that Mickoski’s initiative is only for use within the party and personal interests. “The efforts of VMRO-DPMNE to block this important process for the citizens and for the future of the country, will not succeed.”, it is said in the written reaction of SDSM.
Northern Macedonia last held the census in 2002.
In 2012 there was an attempt to register the population, but it was stopped a few days after it started due to disagreements regarding the registration of the Albanian diaspora.
According to the latest census, Northern Macedonia has about 2 million inhabitants, of which 25.17 percent are Albanians./REL
