Authoritarian Belarusian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenko has said that Moscow has agreed to help Minsk produce missiles, including a missile similar to the Russian Iskander missile.
Belarus, Russia’s closest ally during the invasion of Ukraine, is looking at opportunities to boost its military capabilities, the state-run Belta news agency reported on May 10.
Mr Lukashenko, during a meeting with defense officials, said the events in Ukraine showed the importance of equipping the army with modern and effective weapons and supplies, and also stressed the importance of logistics.
He said he had won the support of Russian President Vladimir Putin during a meeting in the Far East in Russia, where he was discussed with people involved in the production of missiles in Russia and he said he expressed interest that Belarus also make progress in this regard.
“We are building a new rocket”quoted by Lukashenka, Belta reported.
“A very effective missile similar to the Iskander model”he said, adding that Russia has expressed full support for Belarus.
Russia used Iskander missiles during the war in Ukraine, or as Moscow calls it, a “special military operation.”
Russia has used Belarusian territory to launch an invasion of Ukraine, although Minsk has said that Belarusian troops are not involved in the invasion of Kiev.
