Doctors have discovered a “trace of antibodies” that could help identify patients most at risk of developing what is now known as long Covid, a condition where the debilitating symptoms of the disease can persist for many months.
Researchers at the University Hospital of Zurich analyzed the blood of patients with Covid and found that low levels of certain antibodies were more common in those who had developed long Covid than in patients who recovered quickly.
When analyzing the patient’s age, details of their Covid symptoms, and whether or not they had asthma, the antibody trail allowed doctors to predict whether people had a moderate, high, or very high risk of developing long-term illness.
“This is expected to improve care for patients suffering from long Covid as well as motivate high-risk groups, such as asthmatic patients, to be vaccinated and thus prevent long Covid,” say doctors.
Although so far there is no exact cure for long Covid, control through antibody treatments, antiviral and anti-inflammatory drugs, and vaccines can certainly relieve the long-term symptoms of the disease.
