Open Balkans has given the green light to Albanian farmers to export products of animal origin to Balkan countries.
But is Albania ready to export to the countries of the region? If we refer to the data published by INSTAT, the number of cattle and small cattle is always decreasing. Exactly the number of cattle in 2020 approximately reaches the figure of 362 thousand heads, if we compare it with 219 we see that it has decreased by 12.76%.
Likewise, the number of wool has decreased from 1.7 million heads in 2019, in 2020 the number of sheep has gone to 1.5 million across the country. Likewise, the number of goats has decreased from 863 thousand in 2019, in 2020 there are 10.26% fewer goats. Automatically this has also affected the decline in milk production from 1.1 million tons already produced 1.05 million milk. These figures show that the livestock production of Albanian farms is many times lower than that of the countries in the region.
This amount of milk produced by Albanian farms is insufficient for domestic use, for this reason the dairy processing industry imports the raw material from Serbia. The reason why Albanian factories are importing processed milk from the region is related to the cheap price, especially from Serbia, as the whole livestock production process is subsidized there. Open Balkan aims to facilitate customs procedures and recognition of veterinary certificates, but does this mean that the region will buy milk of the Albanian farmer which costs approximately 10 lek more? This trade opportunity will help increase domestic production if the Albanian farmer is subsidized and treated equally as a farmer from Montenegro and Serbia.
