Another request from Russia for negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine is revealed.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov himself claimed that part of the talks was Moscow’s claim to lift sanctions imposed by the West after the start of the conflict. He described the negotiations as difficult, saying that efforts to do so are continuing every day. The US and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky see the situation differently.
The United States has seen no signs that Russia-Ukraine talks are “fruitful” as Moscow’s aggression enters its third month, a senior State Department official has said. “The Russians do not seem to be willing to negotiate seriously,” said State Department senior adviser Derek Chollet.
The resumption of negotiations to end Russia’s war against Ukraine has been called into question, with the Ukrainian president saying it is difficult to negotiate peace following allegations of atrocities committed by Russian forces. These developments come as hopes for an evacuation of civilians from the besieged city of Mariupol fade as Russia continues its offensive in eastern Ukraine.
Today, Zelensky claimed that Ukrainian forces were making tactical advances in the region. His office had previously said that an operation was planned to evacuate civilians from the Azovstal steel plant, where 2,000 Ukrainian forces and close to 1,000 civilians remained trapped.
Meanwhile, in the second largest Ukrainian city, Kharkiv, the day started with mortar and artillery attacks. According to Zelensky, the constant and “brutal” bombing of infrastructure and residential areas “shows that Russia wants to evacuate the Donbas region and evacuate all its inhabitants,” adding that “the defense of our land, of our people, is fighting for life ”.
