The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has begun an official audit of the incident after actor Will Smith hit Chris Rock during the Oscars.
A statement said the academy would “investigate further actions and consequences” in accordance with California law and standards of conduct.
Will Smith slapped presenter Chris Rock in the face and insulted him vulgarly as the latter joked about cutting his wife’s hair.
The academy announced on Twitter shortly after the ceremony that it does not accept violence.
About 45 minutes after the incident, receiving his first Oscar for Best Actor for his role in “King Richard,” Smith apologized in a tearful speech before the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and his colleagues, but not even to Chris Rock.
This kind of behavior by Smith could cost him his excellent acting reputation in Hollywood, but not criminal charges, at least for now, as Los Angeles police have announced that Rock has refused to file a complaint with the police.
The incident started when Rock joked about the haircut of Smith’s wife, Jade Pinkett Smith, but it is not known if he knew that Smith’s wife was battling an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss.
