Activist since 2009 in defense of the rights of the LGBT community, Xheni Karaj has a strong motive to be proud today, as she is the winner of the award “Civil Rights Defender 2022”, Defender of Human Rights 2022.
“When they called me, I thought I had qualified for a shorter list, it took me 5 minutes to realize that I was the winner for this year. I did not think I would ever win an award, this for me is my life and it is not that you do this to be appreciated or given an award. “Anyway, it is very beautiful as a feeling”, says Xheni Karaj.
“I first shared the news with my girlfriend, my partner, who was as excited as I was and to whom I dedicate the award.
This is an award given since 2011 to human rights activists. This is the first time this award has been given to activists in defense of the LGBTI community. There are activists from all over the globe who are nominated and compete. The award will be given physically on May 12 in Sweden.
I was 21 when I went out on the streets and pasted posters in the trees at night. We did the actions at night. Even when giving interviews I hid my identity.
I was called gay when I was 21 years old.
Our challenge is for my partner and I to be legally recognized and if we decide to have a child, for our child to be legally recognized. So I have a lot of challenges ahead. This award motivates me a lot”.
