Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini in his homage described her as “the queen of Italian cinema” as well as “a great Italian artist and artist”.
Vitti was known for her classic films with director Michelangelo Antonioni, such as the 1960s L’Avventura, with which she received a Bafta Award nomination.
Her English-language roles included that of the titular in the 1966 film ‘Modesty Blaise’.
Born in the capital Rome, Vitti began her career in theater, where she was spotted by renowned director Antonioni. He starred in “Night” (1961), Eclipse (1962) and The Red Desert (1964).
She said in an interview in 1982 that “she was lucky to start her career with a great man”, who was also “a spiritual talent, full of life and enthusiasm”.
Her acting brought her worldwide fame and roles in American films such as those alongside actors Terence Stamp and Dirk Bogarde in the espionage comedy ‘Modesty Blaise’.
Vitti received the Golden Career Award at the 1995 Venice Film Festival.
In the 1990s, an autobiographical book of hers became a ‘best-seller’ and ssi text was used in Italian schools and universities.
