Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the United Nations Conference on Disarmament in Switzerland that it was time for US nuclear weapons in Europe to return to where they came from.
He was expected to physically attend the Geneva meeting, but travel bans did not allow him to do so. In a pre-recorded speech, the Russian chief diplomat said Russia was ready to talk about strategic stability with the United States, but warned that the West should not send military facilities to the countries of the former Soviet Union.
“The blame for this crisis lies with Kiev, which was trying to stockpile atomic weapons. I assure you that Russia is a responsible member of the international community and is taking all necessary measures to prevent an emergency of nuclear weapons and similar technologies in Ukraine.Said Lavrov.
Led by Ukraine, many ambassadors, including those from the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Canada, the United States and the European Union, left the room when Lavrov delivered his speech. In the 1990s, world powers promised Ukraine that if it disarmed, its security would not be affected.
This country once had thousands of atomic weapons, stationed there from the time of the Soviet Union. Yes the country’s leadership decided to hand over the world’s third largest nuclear arsenal in exchange for guarantees offered by the international community on its future.
