Sergei Lavrov stated that Moscow will not start a war against Ukraine, but neither will it allow the West to harm its security interests.
US President Joe Biden has warned Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy that there is a “real possibility” that Russia will take military action against Ukraine in February.
But the Russian foreign minister says that as far as his country is concerned, he does not like war. “But we will not allow our interests to be violated with arrogance and ignored,” Lavrov said in an interview with a Russian radio station.
Tensions have risen in recent weeks over Ukraine, as Moscow has amassed more than 100,000 troops near its neighbor.
The United States and its NATO allies are concerned that Moscow may be preparing for an attack.
Russia has repeatedly denied any such plan, but has demanded that NATO promise that Ukraine will never be allowed to join and that the alliance withdraw its troops and military equipment from Eastern Europe.
The US and NATO have officially rejected these demands, a move that, according to the Kremlin, leaves “very little room for optimism.”
“As long as they say they will not change their attitudes, we will not change ours either,” Lavrov said. “I do not see the possibility of compromise here.”
