European Union Special Representative for Kosovo-Serbia talks Miroslav Lajcak said in Belgrade on Thursday that the Kosovo government decision on the use of car license plates and personal documents issued by Serbian authorities has created a new situation in relations between the two countries. both sides and changed the “plans and topics” of the discussions during his visit to the region.
The Government of Kosovo decided on Wednesday to limit until the end of September the current use of license plates of cars entering from Serbia or registered in Serbia and to impose a reciprocity measure for the use of personal documents of Serbian citizens entering Kosovo.
The decision sparked Belgrade’s angry reaction. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that Pristina with these decisions “intends to expel Serbs from Kosovo”, while accusing the main Western countries of supporting Pristina’s decisions.
Lajcak did not want to comment on the statement of the Serbian president on Thursday, but said that “we should seek a solution through talks and not through clashes”.
“I came to the region to prepare for the next meeting of leaders and to talk about the progress in the process of normalization of relations. “Now we have to resolve this situation.”he said.
