The European Union Special Representative in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, said that a “new situation” had been created in Kosovo-Serbia relations that had changed the “plans and topics” of his visit to Kosovo and Serbia.
This, after the Government of Kosovo, on June 29, approved the decision on the possibilities of re-registration of vehicles with license plates issued by the Serbian authorities with license plates RKS (Republic of Kosovo).
The Government of Kosovo also approved the instruction for crossing the border points with personal documents, according to which, all persons who have documents issued by the Serbian authorities, upon entering the territory of Kosovo, will have to be provided with a certificate that replaces those documents.
Citizens of Kosovo, for years, receive a certificate that replaces their personal documents when entering the territory of Serbia.
Official Belgrade reacted harshly to the decisions of the Government of Kosovo, saying that Prime Minister Albin Kurti “is threatening the Serbs in Kosovo with war”.
Lajcak told reporters in Belgrade that “this situation must be resolved.”
“We must not allow any crisis to happen,” he said.
Before traveling to Belgrade on June 29, Lajcak has been in Kosovo since June 27, where he said he was working to prepare for a meeting between Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
Lajcak reiterated on Thursday that his visit to the region was aimed at preparing for the next leaders’ meeting.
“I have come to the region to prepare for the next meeting of the leaders and to talk about the progress and normalization of relations. “Now we have to solve this situation”, said Lajçak.
So far, Kurti and Vucic have met only twice, but without making any concrete progress in the dialogue for the normalization of relations.
This process started in 2011, with the mediation of the European Union and the support of the United States.
Reacting to the decisions of the Government of Kosovo, on June 29, Vucic said that Serbia’s response will be prudent.
“We will not take military action, but we demand that they not take people’s property and evict them,” he said.
Vucic also said that Serbia is ready for dialogue, but, according to him, the Kosovar side is not.
REL has requested comment from the Government of Kosovo regarding Vuiqi .’s statements, but has not yet received a response.
