Germany’s special envoy for the Western Balkans, Manuel Sarrazin, said Kosovo belongs to the Council of Europe, prompting reactions in Belgrade.
He stayed in Pristina on Friday and during a press conference, after meeting with Kosovo’s chief diplomat, Donika Gërvalla, expressed his support after Kosovo applied for membership in the Council of Europe on 12 May.
“Germany recognizes the state of Kosovo and of course we really want Kosovo to become a member of all institutions, and we are for this application [në Këshillin e Evropës]”We have even supported him and we will also do everything in our power to help in this process and to be a coordinator together with you”, he said.
Sarrazin on May 14 distributed a video from this conference, which provoked the reaction of the Minister of Interior of Serbia, Aleksandar Vullin.
Vullin said that the statements of the German envoy are “hypocritical and offensive”.
“To say in Pristina that the so-called Kosovo should be part of the Council of Europe and in Belgrade to talk about Serbia’s European perspective is hypocrisy, but also offensive,” Vullin said in a statement.
According to him, there is no place for Serbia and Kosovo in the Council of Europe, as the latter, according to him, is “under the temporary administration of the United Nations”.
“Often the European Union warns Serbia that it can not sit in two chairs, so let them practice this for themselves, the EU can not sit in two chairs and ask Serbia to align its policy with the bloc and at the same time to support Pristina to become a member of the Council of Europe “, he said.
The European Union, however, has not commented on Kosovo’s application to the Council of Europe.
However, the German Ambassador to Kosovo, Jörn Rohde, and the United Kingdom, Nicholas Abbott, welcomed Kosovo’s application to become a member of this organization.
Rohde said that Kosovo belongs to the Council of Europe, while Abbott said that Kosovo’s application is a signal that Kosovo is committed to democracy, rule of law and protection of the rights of all citizens.
The Council of Europe is an international organization for human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe, based in Strasbourg, France. The Council protects freedom of expression and the media, equality and minorities in the member states.
