These are the figures published by Instat, which shows a significant improvement compared to the unusual pandemic year 2020 where the influx of foreign tourists increased by almost 3 million more.
But, again with all the positive figures, tourism has not fully recovered as it has not reached the pre-pandemic levels, when in 2019 the influx of foreign nationals reached 6.4 million visitors.
Visitors from Kosovo have “saved” tourism last year with almost 2.6 million citizens coming to the country, almost twice as much as in 2020 when their number was significantly lower due to restrictive measures due to Covid. After the strong contraction in 2020 precisely from the pandemic, the past year has strongly brought back the Poles with over 112 thousand visitors in total.
However, beyond the effort and desire to attract as many elite tourists, again those from the region dominate the entrances to the country as in relation to 2020 results in an increase in the number of visitors from Montenegro and Macedonia but also from neighboring countries. like Greece and Italy.
The same growing trend has been followed by the number of Albanians who have left the country. Statistics show that after the easing of restrictive measures by foreign countries over 4.1 million Albanian citizens have crossed the borders, however significantly less than in the pre-crisis year in 2019 when their number reached almost 6 million.
The explosion of new variants is causing many foreign countries to reintroduce austerity measures by not allowing citizens to pass without vaccination doses or relevant tests proving that visitors are not infected with any of them.
This mostly affects Albanians who want to go abroad for vacations or other purposes, while our country does not apply measures to foreign nationals entering the country.
However, such a still unclear situation may again call into question the performance of tourism, which has not yet fully recovered from the pandemic in terms of both the number of foreign visitors and their income.
