The Presidency of Kosovo has reacted to the statement of the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, who stated that Russia supports the “Open Balkans” initiative, which is an initiative of Belgrade.
Blerim Vela, head of the president’s cabinet, Vjosa Osmani, has said that it is now being proven that the “Open Balkans” is aimed at Russian hegemony in the Balkans.
The statement by Vjosa Osmani’s chief adviser came after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday that “the Open Balkans is an initiative of Serbia and that NATO and the EU did not like Russia’s position on this issue.” .
“Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov openly confirms the connection between Russia’s hegemonic intentions in Ukraine and Serbia’s hegemonic intentions towards Kosovo. “Moreover, Lavrov sees the Open Balkans initiative as an instrument to promote regional hegemony by Russia and Serbia and to disrupt EU and NATO integration,” Vela wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.
What did Lavrov say?
The Russian chief diplomat had on his agenda to visit Serbia on June 7. But three countries banned his airspace, making it impossible for him to visit.
After that, he said in a press conference that “no one can break Serbia with Russia.” Among other things, he spoke about the “Open Balkans”, criticizing NATO and the European Union.
“It is clear that Brussels officials did not want us to confirm our position on Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and express support for Belgrade’s ‘Open Balkans’ initiative,” Lavrov said. Lavrov also mentioned NATO intervention in Kosovo during 1999.
