The debate over the increase in the price of electricity in Kosovo continues fierce in the country’s parliament and abroad. But in the meantime, it seems that this increase will not affect the Serb-majority north of Kosovo.
The Chairman of the Board of the Energy Regulatory Office, ERO, Ymer Fejzullahu said that these four northern municipalities are not reflected in the consultative report on the increase of electricity tariffs. While reporting to the Committee on Economy, Fejzullahu stressed that during this year he has opened an extraordinary review on a legal basis for setting tariffs, to reflect the costs of the systems.
According to him, Kosovo has imported electricity at a price eight times higher, while during December 2021 the maximum peak of daily energy consumption was reached.
The official immediately claimed that in a letter from the KFOR commander in 2009, Kosovo was barred from disconnecting Serbs from the electricity grid in the north of the country, even if they did not pay for the electricity they spent.
Calling this a political problem, Fejzullahu said that for unpaid electricity in the north, this institution has been sued by the People’s Advocate and as a result of this court case, the price of unpaid electricity in the four northern municipalities is paid by the Government of KOSTT- i.
