The Government of Kosovo has announced that it has decided on emergency measures in the supply of electricity, which will be valid for a maximum of 60 days. The imposition of these measures was announced after the meeting of the Government of Kosovo, which was held on Friday, December 24.
According to the government decision, emergency measures in energy supply include: Imposition of restrictions on energy supply to consumers, and imposition of special obligations on energy enterprises.
The decision further states that the Government can start implementing the measures immediately but that the decision must be reviewed for approval by the Assembly of Kosovo within seven days.
The Assembly has the right to reject the measures and in this case the government is obliged to terminate them.
The reasoning of the Government of Kosovo states that “Kosovo Electricity System is currently facing significant difficulties as a reflection of the significant increase in electricity consumption in the country, the insufficiency of internal generation to cover consumption, and the crisis global energy which has resulted in an enormous increase in the price of electricity on international stock exchanges ”.
The government further justifies the measures with the fact that problems with electricity supply have occurred especially during December of this year due to breakdowns caused by generators of the power plant “Kosova A” and “Kosova B”. Another reason, according to the government, is the significant increase in electricity consumption.
“Given that about 85% of consumers in Kosovo are household consumers, the demand for electricity has increased significantly as a result of lower temperatures,” said in the decision signed by the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti.
Through this decision, the government has formed an Emergency Technical Committee within the Ministry of Economy that aims to identify and present recommendations to the Minister of Economy of Kosovo.
Kosovo has been facing an energy crisis for days.
Due to this energy crisis, the citizens, from Wednesday, December 22, face reductions in electricity.
The Kosovo Energy Corporation occasionally announces the fall of blocks from the system, leaving neighborhoods without settlements without electricity for hours.
The reductions were instructed by the System and Market Operator – KOSTT, due to the overload in the power system.
The electricity bill in Kosovo could increase by 7 percent in the coming months.
Such an increase has been requested by the Kosovo Electricity Distribution Company (KEDS).
