In North Korea there is no gender difference when it comes to the military, both men and women must join the armed forces. Kim Jong Un’s special forces have been in the military for 13 years.
Military service is compulsory and most young people enroll in the military after high school. Those with higher education serve only five years, while those who have completed the branches of engineering or natural sciences serve only three years. Former country leader Kim Jong II wanted to encourage young people to study science.
The main difficulty faced by the armed forces in the country is the great famine they have to face. Special forces soldiers are treated well, but those who perform military service outside the capital are fed two or three potatoes, but also corn and raw rice.
Because of this nutritious diet, North Korean soldiers are a few inches shorter than their South Korean counterparts, writes Adam Cathcart.
Despite the small amount of food, soldiers are obliged not only to train, but also to help farmers in the rice fields. Many of them are extremely weak and hungry and very desperate as they find it impossible to escape from this condition.
Military police are always on the lookout for deserters fleeing for food. Sometimes these soldiers steal from the villagers and if they find something to eat they steal it without thinking twice.
The Guardian writes that some senior officers ordered the soldiers to steal food and if caught by the villagers, they would be punished. Half of the soldiers return home suffering the consequences of malnutrition and many are sent home prematurely to recover. Most of them due to weight loss find it impossible to walk, so their parents have to pick them up and feed them to regain their strength once again. When they stabilize physically, they are forced to return to the military to complete the remaining years.
Lucky are only those who serve in the special forces or who have good officers who take care of their health. On the other hand, the unfortunate die of starvation before their parents help them. Because of all this situation, military service in North Korea is considered one of the most miserable in the world.
