Kiev on Sunday was awakened by Russian bombing. Local authorities reported that the rocket attacks had damaged infrastructure in the Brovary area, on the outskirts of Kiev.
Over the past three days, Russian forces have hit various targets in the Ukrainian capital and the surrounding region although there was earlier a withdrawal of their troops from Kiev.
Russia has also issued an ultimatum to soldiers in Mariupol to leave the city on Sunday.
“Put down your weapons and we will save your life,” the Russian military warned, offering what it calls a way of escape.
The besieged port city, which the Ukrainian leadership has described as the “heart of the war”, has been the target of a devastating six-week offensive by Russian forces.
But on Saturday Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that eliminating Ukrainian fighters in Mariupol would end talks with Moscow.
The city of Mariupol is of great importance to the Russians, although geographically, it occupies only a small area on the map, it stands in the way of Russian forces to the Crimean peninsula.
Securing the city will allow Russia to build a land bridge from Russia to Crimea and this would be a major strategic and military success for them.
Mariupol is also the largest port in the Azov Sea region and home to a large iron and steel plant.
The city was also a major export hub for Ukraine’s steel, coal and corn. Its total loss would be a major blow to what is left of the Ukrainian economy.
Meanwhile, Russian attacks are reportedly escalating in eastern Ukraine as well as in other southern parts of the country.
