Albania should not worry only about oil reserves. What is coming on the horizon could be an even bigger crisis affecting the energy sector.
The level of Fierza according to data from KESH has reached the lowest level in 20 years, while energy reserves have been halved from January to March.
In these conditions in Fierza is being produced with reduced capacity, while KESH has started again to buy energy in international markets.
As of March 22, KESH has spent almost 6.2 million euros to buy only 8 thousand megawatts / hour of energy.
In these three months KESH has spent 66.5 million euros for 271 781 mW of energy. To understand how big this amount is, one has to compare it with previous years.
In the same period in 2019 the country bought four times more energy, at an average price three times lower.
The government has set ALL 20 billion guarantees for companies in the energy sector to buy energy, but in the conditions of the price crisis even more will be needed, removing money from the state budget.
The management of this crisis becomes even more difficult when you remember the fact that only public water companies have 160 million euros of debts in energy bills to OSHEE. In the plan of measures for energy restriction, it is from these companies that the first restrictions have started.
Meanwhile, for years the country has not been able to catch the right level of losses. If in the region the energy that is thrown in the network loses at levels 5-7%, in Albania the level is 20%. From the level of losses at current market prices alone, over 100 million euros are needed to cover the costs of a network where investments should have been made. Once again, Albanians must have their eyes on the sky, because if the lakes are not filled, the country could end up in energetic chaos.
