US Vice President Kamala Harris warned on Sunday of the very real possibility of war in Europe.
Speaking to the media at the Munich Security Conference, Vice President Harris called on everyone to stop for “a moment to understand the importance of what we are talking about” regarding Russian troops gathered near the Ukrainian border.
“Over 70 years have passed and during these 70 years, as I mentioned yesterday, there has been peace and security. “We are talking about the real possibility of war in Europe,” she said.
Ms. Harris reiterated that a diplomatic solution was still the preferred solution to the issue of possible Russian occupation of Ukraine.
Western leaders warn that Russia is ready to attack neighboring Ukraine, which is surrounded on three sides by some 150,000 Russian soldiers, fighter jets and military equipment.
Russia held nuclear drills Saturday in neighboring Belarus and is continuing naval drills off the Black Sea coast.
The United States and many European countries have been claiming for months that Russia is trying to create a pretext to invade Ukraine and have threatened massive and immediate sanctions if that happens.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to choose a place to meet and discuss resolving the crisis.
Russia has denied any plans to invade Ukraine.voa
