Russian and Ukrainian delegations met today at the formal opening of Ukraine’s joint export hub, following the UN-backed deal.
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar made the official opening five days after the agreement between Moscow and Kiev on the passage of grain between the Black Sea from three Ukrainian ports.
The center will be staffed by civilian and military staff from the two sides in the conflict, as well as delegates from Turkey and the UN.
The main tasks will be the monitoring and safe passage of Ukrainian grain ships on designated routes and their inspections for prohibited weapons, in or out of the Black Sea.
“The staff of the center are aware that all eyes are on them. We hope to make our contribution to humanitarian needs and peace,” the Turkish minister told reporters.
The blockade of exports by the two major exporting countries is believed to have caused prices to rise in the world’s poorest countries.
The opening of the center was reflected by a slight drop in the price of cereals on the stock market.
