The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that any “destabilizing action” by Russia against Ukraine would be a “strategic mistake” with “significant consequences,” a spokesman said.
In a telephone conversation with Putin on December 13, Johnson “stressed” that Britain was committed to “Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” his spokesman said, adding that the prime minister had expressed deep concern about the UK. “With the gathering of Russian forces on the border with Ukraine, he reiterated the importance of escalating the situation through diplomatic channels and identifying a lasting solution.”
Johnson’s comments are similar to the concerns expressed by the foreign ministers of the group of seven most industrialized countries, regarding the gathering of the Russian army on the border with Ukraine. G7 ministers have called for a solution to the tensions through diplomatic means.
Russian media have quoted the Kremlin as saying that Putin and Johnson have agreed to continue talks through various channels.
The conversation between Johnson and Putin comes at a time of rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Officials in Kiev have expressed concern about a possible Russian invasion.
Russia, which illegally annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014 and supports pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, denies having any plans to invade Ukraine.
In recent weeks, Russia and Ukraine have exchanged accusations.
Washington has said it believes Russia may be planning to use the “provocations” alleged by Ukraine to justify military aggression.
On November 26, Ukraine accused Russia of backing a coup plan against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, a charge the Kremlin has denied.
