Russian President Vladimir Putin and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will hold a telephone conversation on February 2 regarding the crisis in Ukraine.
The talks between Putin and Johnson come at a time when diplomatic efforts are stepping up, aimed at easing tensions over Russia’s military build-up near Ukraine. The West has expressed concern that Moscow may be preparing for a possible invasion.
Johnson visited Kiev on February 1 and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
The British Prime Minister said that the gathering of Russian troops on the borders of Ukraine “is probably the largest demonstration of hostility towards Ukraine that we have ever seen.”
Johnson warned that Britain was ready for a package of sanctions and other measures, which it would use “as soon as the foot of the first Russian soldier enters the territory of Ukraine.”
He also said that Western countries are inclined to engage in dialogue, adding that “we have sanctions ready.” Johnson again called on Russia to back down and choose the path of diplomacy, saying such a thing is still possible.
Russia denies that it is preparing to attack Ukraine and has demanded security guarantees related to its commitment to Ukraine’s non-accession to NATO and that this military alliance will not expand eastward.
