The new Ambassador of the United States of America in Pristina, Jeff Hovenier, officially takes office today.
The current charge d’affaires of the US Embassy Nicholas J. Giacobbe has announced that his official ceremony will take place this Monday, reports KosovaPress.
Hovenier, who played a role in the negotiations that eventually led to Kosovo’s declaration of independence, was appointed to the post by President Joe Biden in July 2021 and unanimously confirmed by the US Senate on 18 November.
He spent most of his childhood in Bellingham and many of his family members still live in Whatcom County. Hovenier moved to Bellingham when he was in kindergarten after his father got a job as a professor at the University of West Washington.
Hovenier attended public school in Bellingham, where he graduated from high school in 1983. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and then completed a master’s degree at Georgetown University before beginning his career of more than three years. decades as a diplomat.
Much of his career has focused on security issues in Europe and Eurasia. Prior to his appointment as Ambassador, Hovenier served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Ankara.
In addition to Kosovo and Turkey, Hovenier has served in Germany, Croatia, Greece, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Serbia and Montenegro. He speaks German, Greek, Croatian and Spanish and has received numerous awards, including some from the Government of Kosovo.
In June 2018, the former President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi had decorated the diplomat Hovenier with the Presidential Jubilee Medal of the Tenth Anniversary of Independence.
This is Hovenier’s first time serving as US ambassador.
