Former President of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga said that the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the situation of victims of gender-based violence.
This is what she commented in a discussion organized by the Women’s Group for Foreign Policy, where she was invited to speak in the capacity of former president and director of the “Jahjaga” foundation, which deals with the issue of women’s rights, gender-based violence. and sexual violence during the war in Kosovo.
“For victims of gender-based violence [pandemia] “It was a greater burden than for the rest of us because they were locked inside with their perpetrators without any opportunity to escape the violence,” said Jahjaga.
Jahjaga stressed that it is important for Kosovo and other countries to include gender-based violence in strategies for responding to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, “with concrete action plans to prevent and mitigate this phenomenon.”
This discussion was held at the conclusion of the 16 days of activism against violence against women, until November 25 marked the International Day against this violence.
The former president cited the blocking of the judicial system and the delay in handling cases of gender-based violence in the courts as an impetus for the worsening of this phenomenon.
“This should not happen again as a delay in the process means a delay in access to justice for victims of gender-based violence,” she said.
Recall that according to the data of the Kosovo Judicial Council, during the period January – October, 2021, this institution has received 1,028 cases of domestic violence, while resolving 711.
In Kosovo, women make up the majority of victims of domestic violence.
According to police data, as of September 2021, 1,437 women and 408 men have been reported as victims of domestic violence.
Every year, since 2018, at least 1,000 women have been reported as victims of domestic violence.
Radio Free Europe on November 25 published stories of several women who were beaten and abused by their husbands or partners. They order that cases of violence be reported to law enforcement from the very beginning.
