Ivana Trump, the former skier and former model who would become the first wife of Donald Trump, thus representing one half of a powerful couple in the US in the 1980s, died a day ago in New York at the age of 73.
The mother of the former president’s three older children died in her apartment. Trump himself described her as “a wonderful, beautiful and amazing woman who had a great and inspiring life.”
“She was so proud of Donald Jr., Ivank and Eric, as we were all proud of her. Rest in peace, Ivana!”he wrote on the social network Truth Social.
Born Ivana Marie Zelnickova in 1949 in what was then communist Czechoslovakia, she grew up in the small town of Zlin.
His father was an electrical engineer, his mother worked at the post office. He started skiing when he was four years old and later joined the national youth team.
As her mother would later recall, she early sought to explore outside her hometown. He just didn’t want to stay there.
Soon she would enter the modeling career, and at the age of 29 she met Donald Trump during a reception with other models in New York. A year later, they were married.
When it came to ambitions, she was not far behind her husband and held a number of positions within the Trump Organization and created a successful fashion brand, while remaining closely involved in her husband’s business ventures.
She was the one who chose the pink marble that decorates the floor and walls of the Trump Tower, going over the decisions of the building’s architects, and insisted on the magnificent indoor fountain.
The couple would quickly become inseparable parts of the glamor of the New York social scene. Ivana was found unconscious in the house near the stairs.
The coroner’s office will now determine the official cause of death. In the family’s statement, it is emphasized that she fled communism and embraced the USA, while she will also be remembered for the famous expression addressed to women:
“You have to be strong and independent, don’t forget, don’t get angry but take everything!”
