A team of swimmers in Australia did the traditional dive at Mawson Station to mark the middle of winter – the shortest day and longest night of the year – which is a turning point on the calendar for those living on the frozen continent.
Rebecca Jeffcoat: We are here in Port Horseshoe preparing to do our traditional mid-afternoon swim. It is a custom in the Antarctic calendar to celebrate the middle of winter and the return of the sun. “It’s crazy for many, but we do.”
Residents of Australia’s farthest station currently do not see the sun all day, with the next sunrise not expected for another week.
The brave swimmers were immersed in icy water at temperatures minus 19 degrees Celsius. All dives are performed under medical supervision, with safety equipment and a warm towel nearby.
