Russia has suffered “significant troop losses,” admitted President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman for the first time since the war began.
Dmitry Peskov was asked on Sky News if the war had been a defeat for them, given that Russia had withdrawn from the capital Kiev, lost thousands of troops and that President Volodymyr Zelensky was still in power.
In an attempt not to accept this as a failure, Peskov said: “Yes, we have significant loss of troops and this is a great tragedy for us.”
He further added that the withdrawal from the Kiev region and the northern city of Chernihiv was an “act of goodwill” to reduce tensions during the peace talks.
During the interview, Peskov reiterated Russia’s reasons for describing it as a “special military operation”, saying that Ukraine had become “anti-Russian” and Russia was nervous as NATO “began to move towards their borders”.
Russia has previously said 1351 soldiers were killed.
The exact number of dead is not known, but a NATO official was quoted in the American media as saying that the number of Russian casualties is between 7,000 to 15,000 killed.
