The Italian government today lifted the obligation to wear masks in open spaces for most situations, in response to a better situation with the coronavirus pandemic, adding that it aims to increase the number of spectators who can enter stadiums.
Under the new rules announced by Health Minister Roberto Speranza, from February 11 to at least March 31, masks will only be worn in crowded areas or in public places.
Earlier, Speranza and Sports Minister Valentina Vezzali said the government intends to gradually increase the number of spectators at sports stadiums from March 1st.
The ministers said in a statement that from that date they aim to increase the limit to 75 per cent capacity for open stadiums and to 60 per cent for those where indoor games are played. The current limits are 50 percent capacity and 35 percent.
In recent weeks, the number of new cases and the number of hospitalizations in Italy has been declining, but the death toll remains high – between 300 and 450 most days. On Tuesday, Italy had 101,864 new cases of coronavirus and 415 deaths.
