Officials in Palermo in southern Italy today marked the 30th anniversary of the infamous bombing that killed anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone.
The assassination attempt on the highway near Capaci killed the judge, his wife and three police officers.
The bomb installed to eliminate Giovanni Falcone was so powerful that tremors were recorded by experts monitoring the activity of Mount Etna on the other side of Sicily.
Despite the shock and panic caused by the act of the mafia and the dark forces, the murders of Falcone and Borsellino were followed by a series of arrests and testimony of informants on the “Cosa Nostra”.
But local judge Roberto di Bella says that although most of the perpetrators have been arrested or tried, the case still has considerable uncertainty.
Survivors insist many parts of the chain are still missing, citing Falcone’s own words that “there are similarities between the leaders of the Cosa Nostra and the dark centers of power.”
“We still do not know who really ordered the assassination of Giovanni Falcone, because uneducated people like Toto Riina can not organize an attack like the one in Capaci,” said surviving officer Angelo Corbo.
He is not the only one who believes that there are “people in suits and collars” among the mafia gangsters.
The dynamite on the highway where Falcone lost his life, was placed under the road through an underground tunnel.
However, a lawsuit against the “external orchestrators” of the Capaci attack was rejected by an Italian court in 2013.
“There is no evidence of the existence of foreign supporters. “There is no doubt that these are acts of the mafia,” insists the author Ceruso.
