Italy backs sanctions on Russian gas, and this was openly stated by the head of the Italian executive, Mario Draghi.
Draghi made it clear that although the ban on gas imports from Russia is not being considered at EU level, if a consensus is really reached on the issue, official Rome will agree to it. “A gas embargo is not yet on the table and I do not know if it will ever be“He told reporters.
Draghi explained that even if the flow of gas from Moscow is interrupted, his country still has enough reserves to cover its needs until the end of October. Italy is heavily dependent on Russia for its gas supplies, however, Draghi said if a consensus emerges at EU level to block gas imports, “we will be totally happy to respect it“.
In late March, Vladimir Putin launched a new form of pressure on European countries by signing a decree stating that foreign buyers must pay in rubles for Russian gas from April 1 and contracts would be terminated if these payments were not made. European Union countries other than Hungary have opposed this form of payment.
Following the announcement by several European countries of the expulsion of Russian diplomats, the European Commission proposed a fifth package of sanctions, including a ban on Russian coal imports, which would take effect upon unanimous approval by the 27-nation bloc’s ambassadors.
