Nino Cerruti passed away on Saturday at the age of 91 after complications from an operation, as announced by a spokeswoman for Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti.
Cerruti, who was born in Biella, one of Italy’s leading textile centers, was a key figure in the international fashion industry, respected and known for his elegance, kindness and demeanor.

His grandfather had founded a textile factory in Biella in 1881, Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti. Drawing on his experience in the production of fine fabrics, Cerruti engaged in the production of clothing in the late 1950s.
His first menswear collection, Hitman, appeared in 1957 and was considered revolutionary in menswear at the time.
The Cerruti menswear line was launched in 1967 and would be followed by a collection of menswear a year later.
The first Cerruti boutique opened in 1967 at the Place de la Madeleine in Paris, where Cerruti moved the company’s headquarters to be closer to the international fashion capital. The production of fabrics under the name Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti and the Hitman label remained in Italy.
In the 1980s, Cerruti began a collaboration with the film world. From “Bonnie and Clyde” and “Pretty Woman” to “Basic Instinct”, the Cerruti brand designed clothes for actors like Michael Douglas, Jack Nicholson, Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, Sharon Stone, Julia Roberts, Robert Redford, Harrison Ford, Al Pacino or Jean Paul Belmondo.
