The Albanian Coast Guard ship “Butrinti” has arrived to help the Italian ferry that was engulfed in flames in the early hours of Friday, which was traveling in the Ionian Sea, between the Greek port of Igoumenitsa and Brindës.
The incident was recorded on the northern coast of Corfu, between Greece and Albania, 15 kilometers from the coast. There were 239 passengers and 51 crew members aboard the ship.
According to preliminary information, the fire started around 04:30 in the morning, when the ferry was located in the north of the Greek island of Corfu, about 9 miles off the coast. From the same information, it appears that the fire started from the garage of the ship, where the trucks were located.
According to the information published so far by the local police, “the captain of Euroferry Olympia has asked the passengers to leave the ship”.
Various reports indicate that the ferry has been completely evacuated and no injuries are reported at the moment.
Greek media, meanwhile, point out that the people on the ferry have left through lifeboats.
The causes of the fire are still unknown. Three patrol boats and three Greek Coast Guard tugs were sent to the scene.
Rescue operations continue.
The Greek Coast Guard is coordinating rescue operations, while the Italian Coast Guard has provided support aircraft and naval vessels.
